Developed in Ryukyu Islands (now Okinawa, Japan), karate is a type of Japanese Olympic sport, which involves punching and kicking, as well as knee strikes, and elbow strikes to an opponent. Basic karate training includes kihon (foundation), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring). Also studied for self-defence purposes, a karateka must build discipline and endurance to properly execute karate techniques. The standard belt color system is white, yellow, gold, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, red and black.
The International Olympic Committee has announced that karate will be added to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
